What is DECT and what are its uses?
DECT stands for Digital Enhanced (Sometimes replaced with European) Cordless Telecommunications, and it is a form of wireless technology that is mainly used is cordless telephones, like home landlines. Although it is mainly used in landlines, it is also widely used in businesses, in the form of Private Branch Exchange (PBX) and it allows people to roam freely around an office space without losing connection to their call.
What is Bluetooth and how is it used?
Bluetooth is an alternative to DECT and it can be found in many products. It works by using 79 different frequency bands, and this allows it to avoid most interference from other devices, such as Wi-Fi routers and televisions. Bluetooth technology comes in two main classes, being Class two and Class 3, which have different ranges. This is useful as you can pick the appropriate Class for the device meaning it will not draw too much power, or not reach far enough. Bluetooth technology is always being updated, and most modern technology, which uses Bluetooth, is utilizing Bluetooth 4.0, whilst DECT is pretty much on the same technology as when it was released, although there have been slight changes
Bluetooth vs DECT: What is the range like?
Bluetooth has very, very poor range, and as we mentioned before there are different Classes. Class two has a maximum range of 30 meters, however, it usually works at 5 to 10 meters. Class Three is a step up in range, although it is still very short, and it has a maximum range of 100 meters, although it mainly operates at around 30 meters. There is also Class One Bluetooth, although this is rarely used, and its maximum range is a measly one meter. However in most devices that utilize Bluetooth, like phones, it is more practical to have a smaller range, as unlike DECT that can use 120 channels, it only uses 79. That means if you have 80 devices in range of one another, then one device will be left without a channel.
DECT has a much larger average range of 100 meters, which is more than enough to fill a home or office, meaning it more favorable when talking about home landlines. DECT also allows you to tone down the range so that you do not cause interference like we mentioned with Bluetooth
Bluetooth vs DECT: How secure are they?
Security is a key factor when considering which technology to use, and as they are both often used in offices where sensitive information may be discussed, it is a key factor. There is, however, nearly nothing to worry about, and both DECT and Bluetooth are incredibly secure. DECT uses 64-bit encryption, which would almost never be broken, as it is effectively 18,500,000,000,000,000,000 keys long. Bluetooth uses a more secure 124-bit encryption, which is incredibly secure, and it would take approximately 90,000,000 years for every computer in existence to crack it. So overall there is nothing to worry about with either of them, and they are both incredibly secure.
Bluetooth vs DECT: What else is there to know?
There are some other things to consider, like the fact that a DECT device can have only one other device connected, whilst Bluetooth can have a total of eight devices. This is not really an issue when you consider DECT is mainly used for communications, and where sensitive information is being used it is probably best to know there is no possibility of someone overhearing.
Bluetooth also has many more applications, and you find it in everything from planes to watches. This is because it can transfer all sorts of data, and as we mentioned before, it is incredibly secure.
