As you might know by now, Apple has decided to ditch the 3.5mm audio jack on their newest smartphones, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. Subsequently, they released two new earbuds that will be connected via the Lightning cable or via Bluetooth.
With the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, you will get a pair of wired Lightning EarPods, since normal EarPods will no longer be able to connect to the iPhone without the use of a 3.5mm to Lightning adapter.
Apple also released the Apple AirPods, which this review will go deeper into now. They are essentially wireless Bluetooth earbuds, like some other products we have seen lately, such as the Samsung Gear IconX. We tested the new Apple AirPods here at the Apple iPhone keynote event today.
The new Apple AirPods does not look good honestly. They are long and awkward, and they just look incomplete. They look like a pair of incomplete Apple EarPods. They also do not have an anchoring system like JayBird earbuds, so they might fall off during your jogging session or workout, and they will be difficult to find due to their small size.
The sound quality of the Apple AirPods was honestly not the worst, but definitely not the best either. After comparing, the sound quality of the Samsung Gear IconX wireless earbuds (which are completely wireless, by the way) with the Apple Airpods, we found that the $40 more expensive Gear IconX sounded way better.
The easy setup is probably the best thing about the Apple AirPods. They will pair instantly with your iPhone whenever you open the case near your phone.
The new Apple AirPods also offer touch functionality. Two taps will, for instance, activate Siri, which you can use to switch songs or adjust the volume. The music will also stop whenever you take the AirPods out of your ears, which is a nice touch that will help save battery.
The battery of the Apple AirPods will last for five hours and you can recharge it in its case via a Lightning cable. The portable case itself will store up to 24 hours of usage time with the wireless Apple AirPods, which is definitely nice to have.
So what’s the price for these wireless earbuds? It’s $159 and they will be released in late October.
The Apple AirPods is Apple's answer to the growing wireless earbuds market, but the price to quality ratio is simply too low to be worth it.
They are also not very aesthetic and the Samsung Gear IconX, which cost around $40 more, are a much better investment.
Apple AirPods Review
The pricey Apple AirPods offer a mediocre sound quality, but also offers a lot of features and a good battery time. For example, there's a built-in microphone and there's touch functionality as well. There are many more features, but the lack of sound quality and the awful design choices makes this a decent pair of wireless earbuds. Not great, but not that bad either.
